City Centre malls ‘Go Red’ to raise awareness of heart disease in women

May 21, 2014

Women are urged to get heart health tested from May 23rd-24th at City Centre Qurum and from May 30th-31st at City Centre Muscat

City Centre Muscat and City Centre Qurum, Oman’s leading shopping and lifestyle destinations are championing the global campaign ‘Go Red for Women’ to raise awareness of the number one killer of women in the world – cardiovascular disease (CVD). According to World Heart Federation, heart disease and stroke tops the toll causing 8.6 million deaths in women annually, which is a third of all deaths in women worldwide, and killing more than all cancers, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. With the aim to dispel the myth that CVD is a man’s disease, City Centre Muscat and City Centre Qurum are urging women to protect their hearts and start by getting heart health tested at the malls this month.

Complimentary heart-health testing will take place over two weekends:

May 23rd-24th City Centre Qurum 5:00pm-9:00pm
May 30th-31st City Centre Muscat 5:00pm-9:00pm

“Go Red for Women is a significant campaign that addresses the misconception that women are not at risk for heart disease and stroke,” said Watfa Humaid Al Harthy, Senior Mall Manager, City Centre Qurum. “With the help of the American Heart Association and the Medical Simulation Center, City Centre Qurum is encouraging women in the community to come out, get tested and learn valuable information on how to maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle.”

City Centre malls first embraced the ‘Go Red for Women’ last year, empowering hundreds of women with the knowledge and tools to take charge of their heart health. This year, in partnership with the Medical Simulation Center, City Centre Muscat and City Centre Qurum will be welcoming teams of medical specialists who will be checking for key CVD risk factors in women through examining blood pressure, blood sugar, Body Mass Index (BMI) and cholesterol. Following all testing, women who show signs of risk, will be recommended for referral for further assessment.

As a new initiative this year, the Medical Simulation Center, will also be conducting CPR – cardiopulmonary resuscitation demonstrations, a life-saving skill important for families, the household and the workplace.

“Go Red for Women and City Centre Muscat’s complimentary heart health testing campaign is a wonderful way to reach out to female members of the community and educate them about heart health,” said Husam Al Mandhari, Senior Mall Manager, City Centre Muscat. “With qualified medical practitioners on hand, guests can be assured that they are in capable hands.”

‘Go Red for Women’ was founded by the American Heart Association in 2004, and taken globally by the World Heart Federation – today it is supported annually by more than 30 countries around the world. With the tagline, ‘This is not a red dress. It is a red alert,’ the campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of prevention, diagnosis, and control of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women. With a red dress to universally represent women, and the colour red to reflect both life and vibrancy and a warning, ‘Go Red for Women’ helps to make the world’s number one killer of women a number one health priority.

Majid Al Futtaim is supporting ‘Go Red for Women’ across all 13 of its regional shopping malls covering five countries: Oman, Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates, making it the largest health-related sustainability campaign supported by the Company.
